How to Handle File Indexing Corruption in Microsoft Windows 7

File Indexing is an allegedly useful feature of Microsoft Windows operating system. It extracts critical information from files on hard disk and creates the “searchable keyword index” that Is used for making the file search more efficient. Using file indexing service, you can easily searching for a phrase, properly or word in a document, even without knowing name of the file that you want. In some situations, the indexing of file may get damaged and may access all your files inaccessible from Windows hard drive partition. In such cases, you need to opt for Windows Partition Recovery to get your valuable files recovered from affected Windows partition.

In a practical scenario, where you install Microsoft Windows 7 on RAID 0 partition With MS Windows XP on second partition as dual-boot. The setup process goes fine and all the partitions appear functioning properly. When you try to access files in such configuration through My Computer or Windows Explorer, file indexing might get damaged. Operating system detects damage and it cycles though disk repair tool upon reboot. Disk repair tool find corruption in several indexing files and the process goes on and on. In such cases, you need to find out the cause of this issue and perform Partition Recovery to retrieve files from Windows hard drive partitions.

Resolution

There are four possible solutions that you can try to fix such issues. That include:

The problem might be caused by bad sectors on Windows hard drive. Run hard disk diagnostics utility, which hardware vendor might supply. Perform a health test of your system. RAID 0 doesn't provide redundancy, thus if any disk partition is failing, you should create complete backup of your data.

Verify that system hardware are working properly. The problem may occur due to corruption to RAID array, on which Windows 7 is installed.

Checking integrity and consistency of hard drive using Chkdsk tool. If Chkdsk find errors and can not fix them, the problem could be quite serious. After you verify that array and hardware are functional, boot system in clean boot state.

Perform absolute scan of your hard drive for viruses and other malicious infections using an updated and advanced anti-virus software.

When all else fails, format your hard drive and perform clean reinstallation of Windows 7. Although, this method fixes all the disk related issues but also remove all disk partitions and need Partition Recovery Software to sort out the problem.

Windows Data Recovery Software applications are particularly designed to carry out in-depth scan of entire hard drive and extract all of the lost hard drive partitions and stored data. The tools have quite interactive and rich graphical user interface and thus let you carry out Do It Yourself recovery.

NTFS.Sys Corrupted After Running Disk Defragmenter

The NTFS file system has been designed to much less prone to corruption than FAT or FAT32 file system. But the corruption can still occur. One general NTFS-related issue involves corruption of Ntfs.sys file that can occur out of several reasons. If this file is corrupt or goes missing, it can render a Windows system unbootable and can make the partition inaccessible. You can repair or replace the file by using different methods through Recovery Console. But if they fail, you need a powerful solution to Data Recovery Software.

For example, consider a situation when you try to run disk defragmenter on your Windows XP-based hard disk that is formatted to NTFS file system. The tool freezes and when you restart the computer after this, the computer fails to start giving the below error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys”

You cannot access the disk partition.

Cause

NTFS file system has a driver file called Ntfs.sys, which enables your Windows computer to read/write data to NTFS partitions. The above problem results when this file becomes corrupted or is missing when you run disk defragmenter.

Solution

To solve the above problem, you need to repair or replace the Ntfs.sys file. For this, you can use any of the methods mentioned underneath:

  • Boot your computer using Windows XP installation to start Recovery Console as an administrator. You can then use command prompt to run the below commands:

cd \windows\system32\drivers
ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old

copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers

Where, cd and drive represent the drive letters of CD-ROM drive and primary partition

  • If this doesn't solve the problem, it might be a disk-related issue. So, you can run chkdsk /r command from Recovery Console command prompt.

  • If the problem continues, you should repair or reinstall the Windows installation. To restore the deleted data after Windows reinstall, you should use your last backup.

At times, the backup doesn't work as is found to be corrupted or incomplete. To deal with such problems, you should use a comprehensive partition recovery software. These tools can scan and retrieve the deleted or inaccessible partitions using safe scanning algorithms. It is highly recommended to use these partition recovery products prior to reformat or reinstall the system.

Shadow Copies Deleted After Defragmenting Windows Server 2003 Volume

Windows Server 2003 includes a new feature of Volume Shadow Copy Service, which allows recovering lost or inadvertently deleted shared files and folders. The feature remedies the problem of permanent file deletion in Windows Server 2000, due to which a file deleted from across the network is not placed in Recycle Bin but is permanently gone. On the other hand, it does not prove a complete alternative to backups. This is because that shadowed data resides on the same volume on which the original data has been stored. Thus, if this volume becomes corrupt or is formatted, there would be no other way to restore from traditional backup or use a powerful Windows Data Recovery product.

For example, consider a situation when you try to run Disk Defragmenter utility on a shadow copies activated volume in Windows Server 2003-based computer. You notice that some or all of shadow copies of data are deleted or lost. You observe a definite pattern that the oldest shadow copies of data are deleted first. When you view the System log, you come across errors suggesting disk space issues.

Cause

The described behavior results because of file system cluster size issues. The System Shadow Copy provider uses a cluster size independent mechanism, called copy-on-write, which typically functions at 16-KB block level. This problem occurs when cluster size is smaller than 16 KB. In this situation, the System Shadow Copy provider fails to correctly distinguish between defragmentation I/O and typical I/O operations. As a result, it carries on with cop-on-write operation, which increases the storage area of Shadow Copy. It starts deleting the data copies once the storage area comes to its defined limit.

Solution

To solve the above issue, you are suggested to reformat the volume using 16-KB or larger cluster allocation unit size.

Since the reformatting process causes the entire volume data to delete, you will need to restore it from a traditional backup. If this fails or is unavailable, windows partition recovery solutions come to rescue. Windows Data Recovery products are high-end tools with unique and safe technology to recover lost data and partitions.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Software is an unmatched recovery solution to restore damaged, lost, deleted or formatted disk partitions. It is a non-destructive windows partition recovery product with rich set of features, such as Disk Cloning, Disk Imaging, S.M.A.R.T features, RAW File Recovery and more. The tool supports Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2003 and 2000 based systems.
